The Tata Center’s mission is to address the challenges of resource-constrained communities, with an initial focus on India. MIT faculty, graduate students, and researchers work with on-the-ground collaborators to learn about and identify opportunities to develop appropriate, sustainable solutions.
Programs & Opportunities
- Graduate Fellowship Programs: Candidates for fellowships must have strong technical backgrounds with an interest in design, entrepreneurship, and developing countries, and must be admitted to, or currently enrolled in, eligible MIT graduate-level degree programs.
- Undergraduate Programs: MIT undergraduates can engage with the Tata Center through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program or MISTI summer internships.
- Collaborators: Tata Center researchers work with on-the-ground collaborators toward common goals — sharing expertise, resources, and vision. Support from collaborators allows MIT graduate students and faculty to engage with and understand the context of where they will be implementing their projects in order to develop unique, sustainable solutions for persistent challenges in India and the developing world.
- Courses: The Tata Center offers several courses as a part of MIT’s catalog with particular applicability to engineering skills for the developing world. These courses, taught by interdisciplinary faculty augment the departmental core curriculum taken by Tata Fellows.
